R&D Engineer/Field Service Engineer

Overall Objectives:

The primary responsibility of the Engineer is to provide support for Biodesy’s Delta platform, including R&D and engineering support, and field-service engineering. Support activities and specific technical areas included are:

  • Engineering support for design modifications to the Biodesy Delta platform instrument
  • Support on design and development of test fixtures and future product design activities.
  • Development and implementation of system calibrations and troubleshooting methods.
  • Creation and review of technical product documentation, including maintenance and service manual.
  • Support manufacturing activities, including final testing.

The successful candidate will contribute by applying general engineering skills in complex product development tasks as well as specific skills in troubleshooting, systems testing and repair at the company and at customer’s sites.

Key Results Expected:

  • Install, calibrate, align and operate Biodesy Delta instruments at the company’s lab and at customer sites.
  • Perform remote diagnostics, hands-on troubleshooting, service and repairs at customer site.
  • Interface with cross-functional work teams such as field applications support, product management, R&D, manufacturing, sales and marketing.
  • Professional and timely handling of field service calls and issues arising from field service visits, triage with field applications scientists as appropriate.
  • Communicate with the customer and account manager to ensure customer satisfaction and implement any necessary corrective actions.
  • Create and maintain service information in the company enterprise database.
  • Work with R&D and engineering team on new product development activities
  • Participates in the design, development and characterization of test fixtures, test procedures and jigs for troubleshooting and diagnosis of system related issues.
  • Work with R&D and engineering team on new product development activities
  • Routinely run experiments and tests to characterize and validate diagnostic and troubleshooting tools.
  • Develop, document, exercise and optimize test, troubleshooting and repair procedures to be used in the field.
  • Analyze data from experiments and test runs to understand performance and characterize potential issues.
  • Utilize tools created by the software team to perform data analysis and visualization; help develop new algorithms and analyses as necessary.
  • Review data with colleagues to understand trends and systematic systems issues.
  • Troubleshoot and iterate in collaboration with other product development functions.
  • Plan, execute and drive activities both independently and in collaboration/consultation with peers and managers.

Skills and Experience:

  • BS in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or equivalent qualifications.
  • Previous experience as a Field Service Engineer, including customer-facing aspects, is advantageous.
  • Hands on/practical engineering skills; able to interact with mechanical, optical and electrical subassemblies (required).
  • Experience using LabView in development of simple applications a plus.
  • Experience using Matlab for algorithms or data analysis a plus.
  • Knowledge in SolidWorks for creating small parts or assemblies is a plus.
  • Goal-oriented, highly motivated, creative, and able to collaborate within and among teams and disciplines.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills for written technical reports required.

Availability for flights across the country and eventually around the world, to install, support and repair Delta instruments at customer sites. Initially, travel is expected to be < 20%, but could grow to 50% after 1 to 2 years.
